This spreadsheet performs all of the major calculations required for the design of a stand-alone photovoltaic (SaPV) power system based on monthly average daily data. It can also be used to predict the performance of grid connected systems. As far as possible, the calculations and other considerations used in this spreadsheet follow the guidelines set down in Australian Standard AS 4509.2 – Stand-alone power Systems Part 2: Design Guidelines. However, the spreadsheet should not be taken in any way as a substitute for your knowledge of the design process, or of Australian Standards.

The spreadsheet does the following:

  • Calculates the monthly daily average energy demand at the d.c. bus.
  • Predicts the seasonal variation in energy demand using local climatic data. This monthly demand profile assists with optimising the tilt angle of the PV.
  • Calculates the size of all major components for a system using one of several different configurations including:
    • d.c. load supply only without backup, or
    • series, switched and parallel configurations with inverters, using either petrol or diesel gensets as backup.
  • Components include the PV array, voltage regulator, battery bank, inverter, genset and backup battery charger. The user then inputs a suitable nearest size system component from manufacturer’s data.
  • Predicts the annual solar fraction and assists with optimising array tilt angle to maximise the solar fraction and minimise backup fuel usage from gensets.
  • Calculates both the capital and life cycle costs.

 

Irradiation and other climatic data are sourced by the user from either local Bureau of Meteorology data or from NASA Surface Meteorology data.

Manufacturer’s component specifications are sourced by the user from manufacturer’s websites.
